🌻 How It All Began

Bee Great started in 2018 as a small hobby between David and his dad, Roger — just two backyard hives, a borrowed extractor, and a shared love for bees and real honey.

That first harvest gave us 80 pints, which we sold from a card table in a friend’s yard. That experience sparked something bigger — the idea that honey could be more than a sweetener. It could be a story, a connection, and a way to do good for the planet.

💪 From Setback to Something Sweet

After years as a tenured university professor, David’s teaching position was eliminated during downsizing.  It wasn’t a financial crisis — it was a crisis of purpose.

Rather than return to academia, David decided to grow Bee Great full-time. The business became a second act — a way to build something authentic, flexible, and family-centered.

Living with psoriatic arthritis, diabetes, and heart issues makes every day a balancing act, but Bee Great allows David to keep doing what he loves while being present more for our daughter, Gabi.

🌸 Tammy’s Touch

While David manages the hives, production, and business operations, Tammy brings a designer’s eye and a teacher’s heart.

With a background in floral design and a full-time role as Director of Elementary Education, she helps shape the look and feel of our store — from merchandising seasonal décor to curating honeybee-themed gifts that make Bee Great warm and welcoming.

🏆 A Family Business with Heart

Bee Great has grown from selling 100 pounds of honey in 2018 to over 12 tons in 2024.
We now manage about 150 hives, supply stores across Indiana, and operate our own retail marketplace at 107 McCoy Drive in Churubusco.

Our products have earned recognition from Indiana Artisan and placed at the International Flavor Awards, competing with honeys from around the world.

But awards aren’t what drive us — quality, sustainability, and connection do.

When a customer once reached out to say a gifted jar of honey arrived broken, we replaced it immediately — even though it wasn't a jar of honey we make!
That’s the kind of company we choose to be.

Good honey should do good for everyone involved.

Besides the honey our own hives produce, we proudly support local beekeepers by purchasing and bottling their honey under the Bee Great name, and we’re leading research funded by the Indiana State Department of Agriculture to help beekeepers in cold climates produce more honey and bees with fewer resources.
