Plant A Pollinator Garden For Earth Day!

Today is Earth Day and we wanted to take a moment to stress how important our pollinators are for the planet and for us. Approximately 1/3 of the food we eat is a product of honeybee pollination! Unfortunately, due to habitat loss, disease, use of herbicides and pesticides, and other factors, pollinator populations have been declining. Last year saw record numbers of colony loss with many commercial beekeepers reporting a colony loss rate of more than 60% leading to a pollination shortfall in some almond orchards. So what can you do to help our honeybees and pollinators thrive?

Besides reducing your impact by refraining from using herbicides and pesticides or opting for organic and natural alternatives instead, another option is planting a pollinator-friendly garden. 

When planting a pollinator garden it is best to focus on native and non-invasive plants and flowers for your area. Try to plant a variety of flowering plants that will bloom from early spring into late fall. Clumps of flowers will be easier for pollinators to find than single flowers.
